Susanville's Best of Broadway: Mission Statement

"It is the mission of Lassen County Best of Broadway to organize and produce an annual public performance of Broadway hits to promote singing, dance forms and creative dramatics. Our goal is to help promote the arts in Lassen County."

A Brief History of Our Organization:    est. 1998

Lassen County Best of Broadway was found by Julie Newton in 1998. We celebrated our 20th year of production in 2019 with a special show featuring 20 songs from 20 different shows. Our cast performs seven shows a year at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Susanville, California.

Our Cast:

We have maintained an average of 130 amazing cast members. They devote around 20 hours per week learning every aspect of theater production (singing, dancing, drama, stage lighting, sound engineering,  back stage management, props and stage makeup).

The Production Team:

Our organization operates on a volunteer basis. The production team is made up of 35 community members who donate their time to select the shows, create the props, turn on the lights, and much more. The production team oversees vocals, choreography, stage, lighting, sound, and props. We created an application process for individual interested in working behind the scenes. We believe it is important to get the community involved in all levels of production. Check out the "Production Team" tab for more information.

Community Involvement:

The show enjoys an average annual attendance of 1400 community members making it the largest performing arts program in Lassen County. One of our favorite events is the free, annual performances at the senior citizen centers. The cast loves to perform for local seniors and disabled persons who are not able to attend one of regularly scheduled performances.

Spreading Our Love of the Arts:

We are proud supporters of other art programs in our community. We lend lighting, sound, costuming and prop support to programs throughout Lassen County including the Susanville Symphony, Susanville Choral Society, House of Dance, Joan’s Studio of Dance, JandJ Performing Arts, Lassen Family Services, Lassen High School and the Lassen County Arts Council. Check out the "Community Events" tab to see all the ways we spread our love of the arts in the community.

Bringing More Opportunities to Lassen County:
Best of Broadway has broadened their scope by partnering with the Lassen County Arts Council to bring the Reno Dance Company to Susanville to perform “The Nutcracker Ballet”.  November 2018 marked the sixth year of Nutcracker performances in Susanville.  109 local children get the opportunity to perform onstage alongside the professional dancers.

Fundraisers/Concerts:
In January, 2015 Best of Broadway added a new show to the calendar with “Susanville Soul, A Tribute to the Motown Era”.  The show incorporated a variety of vocal and dance performances with a live band.  There were 37 local performers in the show and it was well received by the public.  In 2019, we produced a Rock and Roll show dubbed "Rock Band: The Live Edition." Check out the "Fundraisers" tab for information on this year's event.

Impact to Our Community:
By the close of 2019, Lassen County Best of Broadway will have provided performance opportunities to over 300 people. Over three quarters of that number are under the age of 18.
